The Julia & Ken Gouw Undergraduate Centennial Scholarship funds UCLA undergraduate students to attend an immersion and volunteer program in Bali for summer 2024. Deadline: April 30, 2024
Through a generous endowment by Julia and Ken Gouw and a match by the
Chancellor’s Centennial Scholars Fund, the UCLA Center for Southeast
Asian Studies offers this summer
scholarship to UCLA undergraduate students only. Priority is given to
undergraduate students who have taken Indonesian language. Scholarships
will cover the student's program fees and homestay accommodations and provide $1485 to the student
for international flights and living stipend. Scholarship recipients are
expected to submit a 1-2 page report within two months after the program
ends.
The summer language and cultural immersion program:
- 2 weeks in Bali, Indonesia - August 19-30, 2024 at Ngurah Rai University
- First week - 20 hours of classroom instruction and site visits for language and cultural learning
- Followed by one week (possibility of extension to 2 weeks) of volunteer after the language &
cultural training ends. It can be done outside Bali as well but the
organization needs to provide the accommodation and the
transportation for the student.
- Volunteer work at local schools, universities, NGOs, or community
groups (e.g. arts, traditional music, education, environment, etc.)
- Living with homestay family (during the language and cultural learning and the volunteer week)
Interested students should submit:
- 1-2 page proposal which details your interests in Indonesia
including personal background, previous study including any language or Southeast Asian Studies coursework, campus involvement, and/or other
extracurricular activities and what you plan to do during your volunteer
work and its value to your academic experience;
- An unofficial transcript;
- Contact information for one professional reference or academic adviser/faculty mentor. We will contact your reference to make them aware of your application.
